Momentum x John Nurminen Foundation

Momentum – Future Onboard is not just about competing in the Ocean Globe Race 2027 – as young sailors, we also want to make a real impact. That’s why we are proud to announce our partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation, supporting the Baltic Sea, a cause that is deeply important to us.

In the OGR 2027, we will sail around the world with a fully international all-U30 crew, aiming to become the youngest team ever to win the race.

As sailors, the sea is incredibly close to our hearts. And for us young people, the future of the Baltic Sea is also our future – we know that the time to act is now. That’s why we have set a goal to raise 10 € for every mile sailed during the race. Since the OGR covers approximately 27,000 nautical miles, our fundraising target for the protection of the Baltic Sea is 270,000 €.

We chose to partner with the John Nurminen Foundation because they work every day to protect the fragile Baltic Sea through concrete actions. Without organizations like theirs, the current state of the sea – and its future – would look very different!

Skipper Aaro Immonen – What Kind of Baltic Sea Person Are You?

I first went on a boat trip in my grandfather’s motorboat before I was even nine months old, in the archipelago of Ekenäs. Ever since then, I’ve loved being on the water. When I started sailing an Optimist dinghy at the age of 11, the sea became even more important to me. In recent summers, we’ve been delivering wooden 6mR boats from one regatta to another through the archipelago. Cruising with those almost 100-year-old classics through narrow channels has been nothing but pure joy. That feeling is hard to recreate anywhere else!

A Must-Visit Spot on the Baltic Sea?

There are so many amazing places in the archipelago that it’s hard to pick just one. But one of the most unique spots is right here off the coast of Helsinki: Kuninkaansalmi. It’s like a gateway between the city and the archipelago. As you sail south out of the passage, the city skyline disappears in an instant, and suddenly, the vast open Baltic Sea unfolds before you.
